“I prefer physical exhaustion over mental fatigue any day.” — Clotilde Hesme
Workdays can be long and grueling. This has the potential to leave you completely drained afterwards. You want to be active in your free time, but pushing past the fatigue can leave you even more exhausted the next day. Conversely, you just hit the couch and get nothing done, which makes you feel lazy and unproductive. Don’t let this doom spiral control your week. Fight end of work fatigue in ways that promote energy but don’t lead to burn out.
Fatigue is on the rise. Close to 50% of people say they are often or always exhausted due to work, which is a 32% increase from two decades ago1. Everything you do during the day burns calories, so in the world of being constantly plugged in, it makes sense we are expending so much energy for work2. This is exaggerated by the fact that your phone is a homing beacon. Even if you are unplugging from work, it takes a single ping for it to pull you right back in.
Then how do you boost your energy and recharge? The first step is to prioritize sleep. This is how you rest and restore your body and mind. Consistent exercise is another strategy, as it boosts your mood and helps circulate oxygen through your body. A healthy diet is essential and should focus on whole grains, high-fiber vegetables, nuts, and healthy oils (i.e. olive oil)3. Your body is an engine, and just like any engine it matters what fuel you put in.
Constantly sitting down and staring at a screen doesn’t recharge your body, it can actually do the opposite4. Build hobbies and routines which help invigorate you throughout the day. Take micro breaks to give your mind a chance to breathe. This doesn’t mean you won’t ever be tired. Sometimes there will be long days. Instead, set yourself up for consistent energy success. Fight the trap of nightly binging by getting up and moving. Your body and mind will thank you.
Action: Adjust your daily approach and see if it boosts your energy. Make changes and see what works best for you.
