The Power of Moonbathing

“Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars.” – J. R. R. Tolkien

The human race has been obsessed with the movement of the sun, moon, and stars since ancient times. Proof of this can be found in structures and monuments built in accordance with solstice and lunar phases. While the sun might be center stage, the moon is never far behind. The importance of the lunar phases can be witnessed not only in structural alignment but in the fact that every single full moon was given a name.

The introduction of endless electrical light sources changed humanity’s relationship with the moon. Instead of waiting for a full moon to accomplish nighttime tasks, now we just turn on a spotlight. Our dependence on the lunar phases might have shifted, but studies show it has never stopped its influence on us. Up to 60% of the human body is water and since the moon has proven effects on the tides, it only makes sense lunar phases would effect us as well. Evidence demonstrates that, on average, humans sleep less leading up to and during the full moon, possibly an evolutionary development from our history to benefit from its natural light. Other studies point to bipolar mood shifts happening in accordance with the moon’s phases. Even studies which sought to disprove lunar phase myths found a 32% drop in anxiety disorders during the moon’s last quarter.

With less sleep and reduced anxiety, humanity is primed to enjoy a uniquely stunning sight as the moon waxes each month. For those in winter climates, the full moon highlights snow like glimmering crystals. In spring, it reflects light onto newly sprouted greens. In summer, it shimmers across lakes and oceans. In fall, it watches as the leaves float to the ground and the temperatures, in some climates, begin their descent. There is no secret here, we could gush about the moon endlessly.

Appreciate the phases of the moon. Take the time to moonbathe. Plan an activity outside in synchronization with the full moon. In cooler climates, host a firepit. In areas where it is already hot, utilize the decreased temperature of the night on a balcony or rooftop terrace. Our best recommendation would be to camp under a full moon, because we believe few things can compete with the experience of moving through nature to moonlight. Some view it as a perfect time to cleanse and review resolutions. In a complete time crunch, just walk outside and gaze up at it. Its same side greets us with full glow every 29.5 days. Take time to enjoy the experience.

Action: Look up the full moon timing and spend time outside under it.

Hint: At the time of this post, the next full moon is the Flower Moon on May 5th, 2023.
