“Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” — Angela Duckworth.
Intelligence is often seen as the key to success, but this isn’t the full story. Consistent execution, showing up and doing the actual work, matters more in the long run. Having vision is great, but you need to do the work in order to create it. This is where action and follow through are the great success equalizers.
Grit and perseverance outperform raw intellect in many real-world settings. Passion and sustained effort are stronger predictors of achievement than IQ across diverse fields like education, military training, and business1. This includes the discipline to navigate setbacks and keep making progress. Self-discipline predicted academic performance more robustly than IQ among middle school students2. This goes back to our points that vision needs action to be built successfully. Execution translates plans and ideas into tangible outcomes, while intelligence alone often stays theoretical without action.
Constant progress on meaningful work is one of the most powerful drivers of motivation3. Use small wins to keep yourself motivated on your goals. Navigate setbacks as they come, then continue to push for forward progress. Take inventory to ensure you are still chasing the right goals, course correction is still action. Intelligence may give someone a head start, but it’s relentless execution that wins the race.
Action: Utilize determination this week to achieve your goals. Work through setbacks.
