“There is no such thing as a pure introvert or extrovert. Such a person would be in the lunatic asylum.” — Carl Jung.
Every relationship, whether with a partner, friend, or family member, comes with its own unique rhythm. One of the most challenging aspects is managing differing energy levels. Yet, this is also one of the most rewarding experiences of social interaction. Life is full of all kinds of kinds. Learning how to navigate different energy types is key to success.
We have all been there. One person is always on the go, ready for new adventures, while the other prefers a more laid-back, calm approach to life. This dynamic can create tension if not handled with understanding. Differences in energy levels are often rooted in personality traits. Individuals with higher levels of extraversion tend to have more energy, social engagement, and activity, while those with higher levels of introversion often feel drained in overstimulating environments and need quiet time to recharge1. This is not a bad or good thing, it’s just science of self. All personalities bring unique benefits to the table. With introverts just as capable of changing the world as extroverts2.
The goal is to understand that all personality types are required to build a better world. Embrace the differences of your peers, friends, and family. The key to managing this difference is communication and compromise. Recognizing and respecting your partner’s or friend’s needs is essential to maintaining a healthy dynamic. Voice your own feelings and expectations, while also listening to theirs3. Then work on middle ground so you can both be the best ‘you’s possible in a sustainable way.
Action: Work on understanding a partner or friend’s needs. Voice your own back.
